Grit is all about persevering and making tough choices moment by moment through life's most challenging moments and turning them into fulfilling ones. It helps people to persevere through difficult circumstances without losing confidence, to never become victims because they retain their personal choice, to be more consistent, to focus on what they can control, and to learn from mistakes and work on them to improve in their upcoming opportunities.
Characteristics of gritty people
Angela Duckworth outlines four main characteristics of gritty people
i. Gritty are enthusiastic.
ii. Gritty people are driven to achieve their goals.
iii. Gritty people are aspiring and determined in their long-term goals.
iv. Gritty people never lose hope have a lot of faith in themselves, in believing in their dreams and ambition whereby they are motivated to achieve their goals.
For people to develop their grit, they can work on it more and more considering the above-mentioned characteristics. Even though obstacles happen to take place, they can consider their faults and mistakes only to improve themselves in the future whereby they
can be successful.
Techniques for fostering grit in others
To link short-term goals to long-term goals people need to develop confidence and competence to further fuel up their motivation. Some of the techniques that can be made use of to foster grit in others are described below:
i. Bucket lists
People could go through a process of creating a bucket list that they want to accomplish. Once the lists are formed they can prioritize accordingly to see what they want to accomplish in their life most importantly.
ii. Vision boards
Once the list is made, people develop visual images of what they want to achieve in life. This can help individuals develop a more specific view of what they want to do and who they want to be.
iii. Grit ladders
Individuals can break down the long-term goals into smaller steps to make gradual progress on their gritty goals. Whereby they can think, analyze and prepare themselves for their long-term goals, this technique can help outline routine goals and help provide smaller, and more manageable action steps. Therefore, while achieving smaller goals, individuals will experience more continual boosts of accomplishment and positive emotion, which thereby increases motivation.
iv. Grit-zone Charts
Providing a visual record of growth helps remind individuals about their goals and helps them demonstrate the consistent effort needed to become comfortable/competent in something. In doing so, individuals see the link between effort and ability which helps
enhance a growth mindset.
To develop grit in our lives, we can try to become more determined, be passionate about our ambitions and consider the options that can get us motivated. Let's intentionally choose to develop grit in our lives to achieve greater long-term success. By seeing certain obstacles as challenges we can also help the younger generation to develop grit in their lives.
