Why do some people suffer real hardships and not falter?

One person cannot get the confidence back after a layoff; another persistently depressed take a few years off from life after her divorce. The question we would all like answered is, Why?

  • What exactly is that quality of resilience that carries people through life?
  • Why do some people and some companies buckle under pressure?
  • And what makes others bend and ultimately bounce back?

Life may not come with a map, but everyone will experience twists and turns, from everyday challenges to traumatic events with more lasting impact, like the death of a loved one, a life-altering accident, or a severe illness. Each change affects people differently, bringing a unique flood of thoughts, strong emotions, and uncertainty. Yet, people generally adapt well over time to life-changing situations and stressful situations - in part thanks to resilience.

We define resilience as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress - such as family and relationship problems, serious health problems, or workplace and financial stressors. As much as resilience involves “bouncing back” from these difficult experiences, it can also affect profound personal growth.

When people are under pressure, they regress to their most habituated responses.

Let's understand how these habitual ways can break or help us rise like the phoenix.

How do some people bounce back with vigor from daily setbacks, professional crises, or even intense personal traumas?

Community resilience is always a characteristic of human communities, but what about you? When you turn your lens inward, how resilient are you?

Resilience will serve you well throughout your life. Once mastered, you can always draw upon your physical and emotional past experiences to manage and overcome difficult times. Learning to be resilient can also help make you stronger; you can develop new skills and new ways of dealing with life with each challenge you encounter. Knowing you are resilient may help you create the strength to pursue your life to the fullest without fear.

Along with resilience come flexibility and adaptability. The more possibilities you envision, especially during difficult times and challenges, the more you allow yourself to overcome and expand as a person.

So here is the opportunity to understand and learn some ways to help you improve and strengthen your resilience.
